Amber Care Guide

This guide below particularly applies to our jewellery products, but applies for all our amber products we sell.Remember amber is the world’s softest and lightest gem stone, and is naturally porous so you just need to follow a few rules to keep it like new.

Things To Do:

1. Storage - Store your amber jewellery in a soft cloth/ pouch preferably in a padded jewellery box, lying away from other pieces of jewelry which may scratch it or damage/chip the amber. Be careful with complicated / intricate pieces when you are cleaning as the amber can be damaged.Don’t throw the amber down and try to avoid dropping it from a height onto a hard work surface or floor when taking it off.It is quite brittle and can easily damage. Keep away from leaving the amber in direct sunlight for long periods, try to keep it out of the sun when storing it.

2. Cleaning your amber jewellery - Use warm, but never hot water and a soft cotton or clean flannel cloth to carefully remove dirt, dust and smudges from the amber stone/s. Never use soaps, detergents, special jewellery cleaner fluids/polishes, or ultrasonic cleaners. With silver parts of the jewellery you can use a silver polishing cloth on the metal areas, and try to rub it only the metal areas. Only use the cloth when the metal is dull looking.

3. Polishing - If you want to improve the lustre / shine of the amber stone, then rub the amber gently with a very, very, small amount of olive oil and a soft clean cloth flannel to remove the excess oil. The lustre / shine will then improve.

Things Not to Do:

1. Hot places : Do not put the amber resting against or on a radiator or near / on a heat source such as a cooker ‐ it’s not advisable to wear it in a sauna.

2. Cold Places : Cold Places : Amber doesn’t like extreme cold temperatures ‐ the difference in temperature from a warm hot environment may cause it to crack. Don’t put it in the fridge freezer!.If you live somewhere that gets really cold in the winter, bear this in mind when taking it off ‐ don’t leave it in a snow drift!.

3. Swimming Pool /Washing - Don’t wear your amber jewellery in a swimming pool ‐ it doesn’t like chlorine. Avoid wearing it in a bath/while showering, with soap and cleaning products ‐ bubble bath etc may damage it. It can get a dull white textured film, which then won’t remove.

4. Solvents & Perfumes, and make up, cosmetics, hair spray, varnishes, nail polish, etc - Please make sure that you put these on before you put your amber jewelry on ‐ put the jewellery on last so you don’t cover the amber in them by mistake.

If you look after you amber as suggested above, it will keep looking good forever :) Remember It took millions of years for nature to make the amber that you see today!
